Privilege | ThomasGreen.US

The privilege of being able to speak has given me opportunities to interact with hearing people that are often not given to other Deaf people.  For example, when I talk about the barriers that Deaf people experience as individuals and as a community, most hearing people don’t understand what the issues are with emergency siren alerts, communication access, the 9-1-1 system, and other barriers.  I wonder if they don’t understand what I mean because I am speaking, therefore reflecting that I may have the ability to hear and have similar life experiences as a hearing person, instead of truly presenting myself as a Deaf person, with a completely different life experience.
