Area woman wins Ms. Wheelchair USA title

A Tipton woman who was left paralyzed after being hit by a drunk driver 14 years ago now holds the title of Ms. Wheelchair USA after representing the state in a national competition.

Phaedra Marriott-Olsen survived a head-on collision in 1996 and is an advocate for other disabled people throughout the state.

“Society just doesn’t think women in chairs are beautiful and the reality is we’re pretty amazing,” Olsen said.

The competition took place July 21-25 in Green, Ohio.

“It was definitely a fun-filled, packed week,” Olsen said.

Olsen got to meet the local roller derby team, visit the Pro Football Hall of Fame and play a baseball game against disabled youths.

“It was just an opportunity of a lifetime I’ll never forget,” Olsen said.

The rehearsals for the event began the first evening the candidates arrived. Olsen said she went through seven rounds of interviews.
