Mental Health

All of us probably know someone who suffers from mental illness. Perhaps some of us even have a mental illness, but the circle of friends and associates who know it is very small. Members of the Boone County Mental Health Board say that silence is the result of the social stigmas attached to mental illness.

As board member Elaine Larson said during Monday’s meeting, “There are people out there who believe evil spirits invade your body.”

What are the signs and symptoms of mental illness? There might be a lot of exposure of mental illness on television and film, but would you be able to recognize the signs of a diagnosable illness if it happened to you or a family member?

“If it’s not in your world, when it happens to you, I’m not sure you do know” what it is or what to do about it, said Mental Health Board Co-chairperson Michele Kennett.
