"Mentally Retarded" Dropped From Division Name

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - Gov. Matt Blunt orders the words "mental retardation" dropped from the name of a state agency. By executive order, Blunt renamed the Division of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities as the Division of Developmental Disabilities. Blunt says the change won't affect the division's mission and services. Five states in the last 18 months have removed "mental retardation" from agency names. And in 2003, President Bush renamed the President's Committee on Mental Retardation as the President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities. Blunt says the state has a duty to diminish stereotypes, and to show that people with mental disabilities are productive members of society. He said the term "retardation" has taken on a demeaning connotation.
